On April 28th – May 1, 2022 the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park San Diego once again celebrated art, flowers and community with SDMA’s annual signature fundraiser and floral exhibition – Art Alive. An immersive fusion of flowers where floral designers interpreted/imitated works of art (painting and sculpture) from the museum’s art collection.

The four-day art and beauty event showcased 100 colorful floral arrangements that inspired the shape and color of the artworks, as well as the return of Bloom Bash, a dynamic celebration that kicked off Art Alive weekend.

The centerpiece of SDMA’s décor during Art Alive is in the rotunda which has become the museum’s yearly tradition. As you enter the lobby, you will be greeted by a colossal and dramatic floral installation that is pleasing to the eyes. This year it was the phenomenal work of Britton Neubacher. The botanical designer used moss with other preserved foliage. The centerpiece is named “Organized Chaos” a botanical showcase that represents the healing effects of plant fractals and sacred geometry. According to Sdmart.org (https://www.sdmart.org/art-alive-2022-rotunda-designer/), Neubacher’s art installation is creatively inspired by the optical illusion artist Vasarely, Altarpiece No. 1 by artist-mystic Hilma af Klint, and the “higher ground” permaculture mounds supporting medicinal flowers and herbs.

Art Alive provides essential support for the museum’s exhibitions, outreach, education, and public programs.
