Drew Barrymore’s Wildflower

Drew Barrymore Wildflower

As a Gen-Xer, I grew up watching Drew Barrymore’s movies. But of course the one that captured our hearts was her breakout role as Gertie in the sci-fi hit – E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. In the ’90s and ‘2000s, I watched almost all her flicks – Poison Ivy, Charlie’s Angels, The Wedding Singer, Ever After, Boys on the Side and a lot more. I remember seeing movies with my good dear girlfriends.

On November 4, I went to Barrymore’s book signing event “Drew Barrymore in conversation with Gary Hoffman” about her new book “Wildflower” at Barnes and Noble The Grove in Los Angeles. It is Barrymore’s memoir. She mentioned she didn’t want to name it A Memoir because it is not her. She wanted to name her book in a way that reflected her personality.  Ronnie from Los Angeles who I met during the event said, “It was a dream of mine to meet Drew Barrymore! She is a kind, loveable and down-to-earth woman who shared her unique experiences with us during her Q&A at Barnes & Noble at The Grove.  Although she has had a unique experience in life, she tells her stories in a relatable way and I cannot wait to read her book.  I got a chance to chat with Drew during the book signing and felt like I was talking to a dear friend.  I will remember this moment for the rest of my life. ”

Flowers
During the discussion Barrymore mentioned that flowers are such a big part of her life. Her own production film is even called Flower Films.

Drew Barrymore with the press

“Flowers they’ve been such a big part of my life and they were so formative to me living at that house because it was a little bit of a sketchy neighborhood. But there were these beautiful cascading sky high flowers that I saw everyday and they just showed me that like a highway, flower can be in the middle of a traffic jam. Growing up in this house really taught me to fight for flowers. You never give a flower to someone and have this reaction (grimace facial expression), everybody’s happy when you give them a flower. It’s the nicest gesture people can do on planet earth. It’s devoid of negative connotation or misconstruded act. It’s a beautiful thing and not many things are pure in the world.I know because of this funny little place that I feel the way I do about people, life and flowers.”

Bohemian Lifestyle
“I grew up in a very Bohemian lifestyle. My parents split before I was born. My mother worked at The Comedy Store and Troubadour in the heyday. It was crazy. There were a lot of artistic characters in my upbringing, a lot of gay men and a lot of unique flamboyant people that I grew up with in this neighborhood. My mom is a very open minded person. She brought me up that way and I couldn’t be more grateful to her. It made me someone who I am very much today.”

Great Adventure
“People in life can surprise you and you can surprise yourself. You can screw up and you can fix it and you can have a great adventure.”

Wildflower is an insightful and profound stories from Barrymore’s past and present told from the place of happiness she’s accomplished today.
