The ’80s called, they want Flock of Seagulls back

What comes first, the hairstyle or the hit song? If you remember the iconic hair of Mike Score, the lead vocalist of A Flock of Seagulls, then you should know their hit song “I Ran” and his ultimately styled famous hair. According to UK Daily Record, it wasn’t Kajagoogoo star Limahl’s hedgehog mullet or The Human League frontman Phil Oakey’s lopsided look which were both big haircuts of the 80s. The most iconic intricately coiffure of the 80s came courtesy of Mike Score, the lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls. And speaking of Flock of Seagulls, I went to a time machine last week at our local live music hall in San Juan Capistrano’s The Coach House and saw the concert of one of my 80s favorite band “Flock of Seagulls” except the most famous haircut in pop music history is gone (no pun intended). I was so stoked to see him in concert, except that the original band members were not there. This is to be expected for comeback concerts. And yes Mike Score and a new young member of his band performed all their hit songs. Score was all-clad in a black outfit with a leather black jacket and shirt, Mike had an electronic keyboard that filled in for some of the band members the while performing. And to be honest, he still sounded the same from the 80s. I was impressed. He also mentioned at the venue during a break from his performance, back in the 80s he was excited to discover how famous his band had become in America. Their hit song ranked as one of the top hits on the dance charts.

Did I mention, that Coach House turned into a club? We Gen Xer’s started to dance to “Space Age”, “The More you Live”, “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)The More you Love” and of course the influential hit song “I Ran”. Did you know “I Ran” was also performed in the Academy Award-winning movie “La La Land” when Mia (Emma Stone) went to see the 80s cover band and requested “I Ran” with the band and started to dance ridiculously? Here’s the footage . VH1 named “I Ran” as one of the “100 Greatest Songs of the 80s” and was also listed at number 2 on VH1’s “100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s”.

I can now say, bucket list checked. I saw “Flock of Seagulls” performed live, even though it took me more than 30 years ( I could not afford expensive concerts when I was 13). And not only that, I had a photo with Mike Score. He was nice enough to have a selfie.

Don’t worry if you just read this and didn’t see the concert. I got you covered with some of the footage below. Enjoy!
