Top 10 ‘80s Pop Culture Scoops of the Week

Greetings PopBuff fans! My name is Dave and I’m a new face at PopBuff. I also happen to be Ruchel’s husband. Lucky for Ruchel, I’m a big fan of ’80s and ’90s pop culture. I will be joining the blog as an ongoing contributor. We are starting a new feature on PopBuff called the Top 10 ’80s Pop Culture Scoops of the Week.

Each week, I go hunting for cool ’80s related news and content on the web to share. I search the deepest, darkest places of the old inter-web until the wee hours of the morning and sometimes I uncover some pretty sick stuff. Don’t panic.. it’s kid friendly.

Without further ado, here is the first edition….

#1 Ever wonder what David Hasselhoff is up to in Sweden?

After watching this promo on his upcoming celebration of the ’80s and ’90s, I’m moving to Sweden! I had no idea….

#2 Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad was a ’80s Teen Heartthrobe?

Who knew he was a teen heartthrobe in the ’80s? He starred as a drama professor in the ’80s series “Loving”. In this article, he does a photoshoot “working out” in Central Park for TeenTalk magazine. Thanks to Rebecca Rose over at Jezebel.com

#3 The Greatest Happy Meal Toys of the ’80s strikes me as not so great.

I never kept my Happy Meal toys. I played with them for one day and they went straight to the trash. I’m sure there are plenty of collectors out there that would tell me differently though. Thanks to Bob over at theChive for this post.

#5 20 Songs From The ’80s That Your Kids Should Know By Heart

WCBS FM 101.1 out of New York had a series on all the songs your kids should know from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Good stuff. I’m preparing my ’80s lesson plan for the kids right now.

#6 The Most Amazing Video You Will Probably Ever See. It Basically Sums Up The 80s Perfectly.

I unearthed this from Epic Dash. Oh my G-d! Crystal Light sponsored it? Alan Thicke hosts it? And its about aerobics? When these types of specials aired on TV, I would turn to my dad and see him snorrring on the Lazy boy. But… I got to give these guys credit where credit is due. Jane Fonda and all them folks created a huge exercise trend that changed America in the ’80s.

To see the full poster image you need to visit the post. The artist Jason Edmiston did an amazing job on this dorkly_awesome_posterposter. The poster is huge and has so many other references on it.Thanks to Dorkly for sharing this image.

#8 25 Scariest ’80s Horror Movies

I got this one from Josh Winning at Total Film: The Modern Guide to Movies. My Kids are always asking me, “What are the scariest movies you watched growing up?” and I never had a good answer for them. I always told them I thought “The Shining” was pretty scary. Well, this post on Total Film certainly reminds me of many more. Enjoy!

#9 Taylor Swift Dismisses Haters in ‘Shake It Off’ Video

This is what I love. The big time pop stars always figure out how to bring it back to the ’80s. It turns out Taylor Swift was born in 1989. She is an ’80s baby and she named her latest album “1989”. On Monday, her new single and video came out called “Shake It Off”. It is totally ’80s inspired. I found this post written by Neha Prakash at Mashable. Check it out.

#10 20 Things That Only Happen In ’80s Music Videos

Sophia Elias posted on Hello Giggles this week a list of things that only happen in ’80s music videos. The first video she featured was “Uptown Girl” where “Mechanics had perfectly choreographed dance moves.” I read recently that Billy Joel serenaded his ex-wife Christie Brinkley with this 1983 hit at one of his recent concerts. The picture below is from the Cars video “You might think”. Another unlikely lip stick scenario…

Summary

There ya go. Ten absurd, hilarious, shocking, and heart felt ’80s pop culture mentions from the around the web this week. What do you think? I’m still digging the Hoff. He really gets around.
