On August 27, 2024, the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa became a haven for 311 fans as the band—Nick Hexum (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Aaron “P-Nut” Wills (bass), Chad Sexton (drums), Tim Mahoney (lead guitar), and Doug “SA” Martinez (lead vocals, turntables)— took the stage for a night that melded nostalgia with electrifying energy. The evening was blessed with perfect weather, adding to the magic of a concert that drew a diverse crowd spanning Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z.
From the moment the lights dimmed and 311 launched into their set with “Beautiful Disaster,” it was clear that the band had come to deliver an unforgettable performance. The amphitheatre, packed to the brim with dedicated fans, resonated with an infectious energy that pulsed through every corner of the venue. As the opening notes of the song hit, the audience’s collective anticipation turned into a sea of dancing bodies and nostalgic smiles.
Formed in Omaha, Nebraska in 1988, 311 has consistently pushed the boundaries of rock music. Their innovative fusion of rock with electronic elements, notably their early adoption of 808 kicks, has made them trailblazers in their genre. It’s a testament to their influence that their sound still resonates with fans decades later.
The band, marking their 34th anniversary, unleashed a setlist brimming with both beloved classics and hidden gems. The evening’s crowning moment was their electrifying rendition of “Down,” a track that soared to No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart in 1996. As the iconic guitar riff kicked in, the amphitheatre erupted into a frenzy of cheers and jubilant leaps. The energy continued to soar with the pulsating beats of “All Mixed Up,” turning the venue into an impromptu dance club where fans moved in unison to every rhythm.
A standout moment of the night was the thrilling drum showdown, where each member of the band took a turn behind the kit, showcasing their impressive drumming skills and adding an extra layer of excitement to the performance.
But the true highlight for me and my favorite track was the enchanting performance of “Amber.” As the first notes floated through the night air, the crowd fell into a reverent hush before breaking into an overwhelming chorus of voices. The shared experience of singing along and slow dancing beneath the starlit sky transformed the moment into something profoundly magical, a perfect blend of personal connection and collective joy.
Throughout the night, 311’s charisma and stage presence were palpable. Nick Hexum, the band’s founding vocalist and guitarist, led the charge with his trademark energy and engaging demeanor. Each song was performed with the kind of passion that made it clear why 311 continues to captivate audiences after more than three decades. The band’s ability to blend genres and stay relevant over the years was on full display, proving once again why they remain a cornerstone of alternative rock.
Nick Hexum energized the crowd, saying, “So how are we doing out there? Is everybody happy? You guys feeling the unity right now? Are you guys feeling the unity? But we’re definitely happy because earlier this summer we celebrated 34 years of getting to do what we love… just traveling around, seeing our people, spreading a positive message and we’re super grateful for a chance to do this yet again. Thank you guys so much for showing up for us.”
Adding to the night’s special moments, it happened to be Hexum’s daughter’s birthday. He shared with the audience, “And before we go, I want to say tonight we’re celebrating my daughter’s 15th birthday. So on the count of three, everybody scream ‘Happy birthday Echo.'” With that, Echo came out on stage, and as Hexum counted, “One, two, three,” the crowd erupted in a loud, “Happy birthday Echo!”
In the end, the Unity Tour at the Pacific Amphitheatre was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of 311’s enduring legacy and their ability to unite fans across generations through the power of music. For those lucky enough to be there, it was a night that reaffirmed the timeless appeal of one of rock’s most innovative and beloved bands.
