Bob Odenkirk is a mega-star in the comedy-writing world. His impressive resume includes writing for “Saturday Night Live” that won him an Emmy, “The Dennis Miller Show”, and “The Ben Stiller Show” where he won another Emmy for his writing.
To be honest though, I didn’t really know of him until the TV series “Breaking Bad” where Odenkirk played the character Saul Goodman. According to Wikipedia, by the end of the series, it was the most-watched cable show on American television and in 2014 entered the Guinness World Records as the highest rated show of all time.
Well, I did it! I wrote a bunch of stuff very slowly and piled it on my desk.”
His latest book called “A Load of Hooey” consists of short stories and thoughts from avant-garde fiction to free-verse poetry. The book telegraphs his sense of humor over the course of his career.
As we were waiting for him at Vroman’s Bookstore, he walked up to the podium covering his face on the left side with his book and said “You don’t see me .. you don’t see me.” When he reached the podium he said “Well, I did it! I wrote a bunch of stuff very slowly and piled it on my desk.” See the short video below.
I like chatting with folks at book signings. I spoke with Sophie, a college student at University of Riverside who was seated beside. She explained to me how much she loved Odenkirk’s character on “Breaking Bad”. Sophie said, “I thought Bob Odenkirk’s book signing was very entertaining. The crowd was laughing non-stop and it felt very close and intimate. Odenkirk really connected with guests by answering the Q&A questions in depth rather than replying with a lazy one sentence answer. We got to learn a lot about him and learn how his hilarious book came to fruition. He was also kind enough to allow a photo-op with anyone who got his book. Although he didn’t answer anything “Better Call Saul” or “Breaking Bad” related, it was still a great event nonetheless.”
After the reading, I was able to chat with him and had three photo ops, one with my boys and two with me. With all his accolades he remains quite warm and modest. I really enjoyed meeting Bob Odenkirk.
