VH-1’s Hindsight is a great nostalgia TV show especially if you’re a Gen-Xer like me. Going back on the decade of the ’90s – it’s the era of alternative rock, dialing star 69,
video rental stores, pagers, and AOL – America Online Instant messaging (did I mention I got addicted to AOL emails/chatrooms and Instant Messaging?) And all of these are significant part of “Hindsight” TV show. The ’90s if not the best was one of the best decades of my life. It was the decade that I saw REM band, my first brand new car (Acura Integra), my first apartment, first dream job during the dot com era (web producer) and most of all I was just enjoying my single life with my friends and was an independent woman.
The show “Hindsight” starts with Becca looking at a full length mirror with her 1995 reflection – wearing a black leather jacket and present time wearing a black dress. The theme music
is Spacehog’s “In the Meantime“. Becca, the lead character of “Hindsight” played by Laura Ramsey who at the outset of the series is living in New York City in the age of smart phones, hash tags, reality shows is about to walk down the aisle for a second time while wrestling with doubts. She wishes she could ask her best friend Lolly (Sarah Goldberg) for guidance, but they had a falling out and haven’t spoken for years. After one inexplicable elevator ride later, she arrived in the year of 1995. With going back in time, Becca resolves to use her trip to correct what she sees as personal and professional mistakes.
I had the opportunity to do a candid short interview with Laura Ramsey via phone. When I talked to her she sounded very warm, friendly and giggled a lot.
Ruchel: What do you remember about the ’90s?
Laura: I was in the seventh grade. My sister was 4 years older than me. I remember so much …. so it’s like channeling my sister. My mom sent a pack of ’90s clothes to the wardrobe lady. And if you remember the Thanksgiving Dinner scene, all of the clothes we were wearing were from the ’90s. I love the ’90s. I can listen to Cranberry songs all day.
Ruchel: What’s your favorite gadget/gizmo from the ’90s?
Laura: The Discman
Ruchel: What’s the most important aspect of the show?
Laura: It’s the relationship journey….how to deal with them in a deeper level. Would you change your decision? What would happen if…. Bringing up questions in life.
Ruchel: Any challenges doing the show?
Laura: The hours and the culture. A lot of laughing and crying and it’s exhausting but I never felt more fulfilled in my personal work.
Ruchel: Is there any actor you’d like to work with in the future?
Laura: Any person that is creative and has great stories. I’d like to work with Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks.
Ruchel: If you are going back to the ’90s, would you change anything in your life?
Laura: I’ll make myself cooler. I was a dork (ha ha ha). I would not change anything.
Ruchel: Any words for the fans?
Laura: I’m so happy. Please keep watching the show. I’m excited to take this journey with you.
Special thanks to Michael Cilnis and Shannon Barr
