If you were a teenager or a tween in the ’80s you would know Molly Ringwald. Ringwald is the quintessential ’80s teen icon and a modern beauty. Known for starring in John Hughes ‘ classic films, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club she has also appeared on Broadway in Cabaret and Sweet Charity. Currently she plays a mom in the ABC Family Network series The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
Ringwald recently discussed her debut fiction book “When It Happens To You” with Meghan Daum, LA Times author and columnist at Live Talks LA in Santa Monica. As she walked inside the venue, I noticed she still stood out as Molly Ringwald I remember 25 years ago. Still looks beautiful dressed in a simple but classic black and red flowy dress with 3/4 sleeves.
The interview began with the question of how she get started writing and she replied that writing is something else she has done her whole life as a hobby but did not anticipate publishing it. She also mentioned she has always been interested in writing fiction “I like Haikus but I like to write a collection of short stories.” She added that she got very involved with the characters, “I identify with all of them. They are completely invented but certain character influence me in all their personalities.”
The book depicts a Los Angeles family, their friends and neighbors as they deal with the bumps and grinds of everyday life – infidelity, affliction and vulnerability. It was recently ranked number one in Short Stories on Amazon.
As the interview wrapped up, Meghan Daum asked her what would be her greatest hope for the readers of the book and she replied with enthusiasm, “That they get involved with the characters and touch their lives in a way.”
So what is the next plan for the novelist? She plans to adapt the book in to a film version and direct it.
Special thanks to Ted Habte-Gabr of LA Live Talks.
