The legendary action star opened up about his inspiring new documentary Dolph: Unbreakable, offering fans a rare glimpse into his personal journey of strength, resilience, and reinvention.
Unbreakable is a riveting feature documentary that peels back the layers of Dolph Lundgren’s iconic action-hero persona to reveal the extraordinary—and often painful—journey of one of Hollywood’s most multifaceted stars. The film traces his remarkable path from a disciplined childhood in Stockholm to earning a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, becoming a two-time European Karate Champion, and stepping into the glitz of Tinseltown as a bodyguard for 1980s pop icon Grace Jones. It was that chapter that led to both a romantic relationship and his unforgettable breakout role as Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985).
Beyond the fame and the physical prowess, Dolph: Unbreakable explores Lundgren’s deeply personal battle with cancer and his relentless pursuit of purpose, reinvention, and healing. It’s an intimate and inspiring portrait of resilience that redefines what it means to be truly strong.
Dolph Lundgren looked effortlessly stylish and sophisticated on the blue carpet at the Newport Beach Film Festival on October 21 for the North American premiere of his documentary Dolph: Unbreakable, held at Starlight Triangle Square Cinemas in Costa Mesa, California. He wore a sleek blue blazer paired with a crisp white dress shirt for a relaxed yet polished touch. His black tailored trousers complemented the jacket perfectly, while his choice of black casual sneakers added a modern, understated edge to the look—reflecting Lundgren’s timeless charisma and confident, laid-back demeanor.
On the blue carpet, Lundgren was warm and engaging with fans who asked to take photos with him, graciously posing for pictures and taking time to chat. He was also kind enough to do a short interview with me during the premiere.
Here is the Q&A:
Ruchel: Congratulations on premiering your documentary Dolph: Unbreakable, here at the Newport Beach Film Festival! What does it mean to share such a personal project in this community-focused, creative environment?
Dolph: I’m very happy to share it with everybody here in Newport Beach. It’s the first screening for people outside just our inner circle. We were looking for distribution. So it’s nice to expose this to a larger audience. And it’s going to be interesting to hear and see people’s reactions. And you know, I’m not really nervous but just kind of excited about it. And like I said, it’s the first time that I’ll see other people watch it and I don’t know how they’re going to react. So it’s cool. It is interesting for me.
Ruchel: Why did you pick the title “Dolph: Unbreakable“?
Dolph: Dolph: Unbreakable has to do with just having fights and you know being challenged in life in different times of my life, and how to get through those different fights and challenges.
Ruchel: How did it feel to watch your own story unfold on screen?
Dolph: It feels a bit unreal to see it unfold. I’ve been fortunate to have a very exciting life and been blessed to have all these opportunities and done a lot of different things, but to see it on screen, it’s kind of unreal to some degree. I feel like it sometimes, it feels like it’s somebody else’s, like.
