There are concerts you enjoy, and then there are concerts that transport you back to a moment in time. Duran Duran’s headlining performance on the opening night of BeachLife Festival 2026 on Friday, May 1, was exactly that kind of experience — nostalgic, electrifying, stylish, and effortlessly cool.
The weather could not have been more perfect. A soft ocean breeze drifted through the crowd while the temperature sat at that sweet spot where a light jacket felt just right. Fans began arriving as early as 12 noon, determined to secure the perfect viewing spot. Blankets and towels covered the grass as longtime Duranies camped out for hours, patiently waiting for the legendary British band to take the stage.
By sunset, anticipation filled the beachside festival grounds.
The moment the lights dimmed, screams erupted across the crowd as “Is There Something I Should Know” kicked off the night. Duran Duran immediately set the tone with a high-energy entrance led by the charismatic Simon Le Bon, who stormed onto the stage wearing a bright yellow jacket paired with silver leather pants, flanked by two female backup singers.
At 66, Le Bon moved with the energy of someone decades younger — twisting, dancing, spinning, and commanding the massive audience with remarkable stamina and charisma. His voice remained impressively solid throughout the evening, proving why Duran Duran continues to thrive as one of the most enduring live acts from the ’80s era.
After the opening number, Le Bon smiled at the crowd and warmly declared:
“It’s good to be at your beach. Beach Liffffe. We love it.”
The crowd erupted once again before the band launched into the explosive “Wild Boys.” After the song ended, the backdrop screen suddenly transformed into the unmistakable visual style of a classic James Bond movie opening sequence. The audience instantly recognized what was coming next and cheered loudly as the band performed their iconic Bond theme, “A View to a Kill.”
Fashion has always been part of Duran Duran’s identity, and the band looked every bit as stylish as their music sounded. Bassist John Taylor turned heads with newly dyed platinum blonde hair, dressed entirely in black with a leather jacket layered beneath an oversized blazer. Keyboardist Nick Rhodes embraced his signature dramatic aesthetic wearing a military-style peaked officer’s cap, while drummer Roger Taylor kept things sleek and understated in a black collared shirt with military-inspired striped pants.
One of the most entertaining moments of the night came when Le Bon playfully addressed the audience saying:
“Oh, there’s some mighty good smells around this place. I can smell the fish frying. In fact, it’s making me a little bit…”
Before he could finish, the audience shouted in unison:
“Hungry!”
Right on cue, the band launched into the crowd favorite “Hungry Like the Wolf,” instantly transforming the festival grounds into one giant singalong.
Another surprise highlight came when the band performed a cover of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Evil Woman.” The unexpected choice turned out to be a perfect fit for the night’s atmosphere, with fans dancing and cheering throughout the performance.
The emotional momentum continued with “What Happens Tomorrow” and “Careless Memories.” After the songs, Le Bon paused and warmly addressed the audience:
“How are you doing out there? You all nice and warmed up? Hot? Where it counts.”
The crowd laughed and cheered at Le Bon’s playful humor before he introduced the emotional ballad “Ordinary World.”
As the iconic song filled the Redondo Beach air, thousands of fans sang along under the stars, creating one of the most emotional moments of the evening. Le Bon dedicated the song to:
“The pursuit of happiness, freedom, and a little bit of truth.”
Le Bon then turned his attention to one of the band’s backup singers, Anna Ross, playfully saying:
“You’re going to dance Anna? You give me shivers. Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to introduce Anna Ross. We’re going to do a little duet together. Another song from The Wedding Album. This is ‘Come Undone.’”
Anna Ross delivered a stunning performance alongside Le Bon, whose chemistry and vocals elevated the hauntingly beautiful song into one of the standout highlights of the night.
The energy shifted once again as the opening synths of “Planet Earth” blasted through the speakers. Fans jumped to their feet dancing as Le Bon suddenly announced:
“It’s time. Are you ready? Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we’ve been waiting for, the chance to play our new single ‘for the first time’ to an audience. First time!”
The band then debuted “Free to Love” live for the very first time. Despite being unfamiliar to many in the audience, the song was warmly embraced by fans eager to experience the next chapter of Duran Duran’s musical evolution.
Afterward, the band launched into “(Reach Up for the) Sunrise.” Le Bon glanced down at his playlist and teased the audience:
“You ready for a bit of da na na na?”
The crowd screamed back:
“YES!”
Everyone knew exactly what was coming next.
Sensing the concert was nearing its finale, Le Bon suddenly announced:
“Catwalk. I’m going to get a different vibe.”
What followed became one of the most visually entertaining moments of the night. As camera click sounds echoed through the speakers and lights flashed like paparazzi bulbs, Le Bon strutted confidently down the extended runway stage like a supermodel walking a Paris fashion show runway before launching into “Girls on Film.”
The performance seamlessly transformed into a thrilling mashup of “Girls on Film / Psycho Killer,” sending the audience into a frenzy.
For the encore, Le Bon jokingly admitted:
“It seems we spent a little bit longer here than we were supposed to. So we’ve got one song left. And what’s it gonna be?”
The crowd immediately screamed:
“RIO!”
The backdrop screen lit up with the instantly recognizable artwork from the iconic Rio album cover — painted by the legendary Patrick Nagel and designed by Malcolm Garrett — helping define the MTV era and becoming one of the most recognizable album artworks of the 1980s.
As “Rio” exploded across the festival grounds, fans danced, screamed, and sang every lyric like it was 1982 all over again.
After the final song, the band members walked to the extended stage, leaning down to shake hands with fans who had waited all day for this unforgettable moment.
Under the perfect Redondo Beach night sky, Duran Duran delivered more than a concert — they delivered a celebration of nostalgia, timeless music, fashion, and pure joy.
It was an amazing night.
