I had the opportunity to attend the media preview of Cavalia: Odysseo in Irvine. Going to work everyday, one can’t help but notice the massive big white top that attracts every single passerby on the 405 freeway. Odysseo’s big top is grandiose – larger than a hockey rink, and about the size of an NFL football field. The back stage area offers a playground for beautiful horses.
As we entered the gate, I was transported to the media section. I had a photo-op with Odysseo’s step and repeat, browsed through the merchandise, and got some tasty popcorn. When the show was about to start, I was directed to the center stage where we were greeted by the creator and artistic director, Norman Latourelle. Norman gave a short introduction to Odysseo. The show started with aerialist/acrobats in a misty enchanted forest. The dancers and acrobats defied gravity, and their acrobatics were awe-inspiring. As the show progressed, I noticed the high-tech theatrical effects, including a stunning video backdrop that made me feel like I was in the world’s most beautiful landscapes. The stunts were breathtaking and jaw dropping. I cringed in my seat, because I felt something bad was going to happen with the riders who were doing their stunts; especially when they were riding upside down and facing in an opposite direction! Another feast for the eyes was the full-sized carousel with wooden horses and poles, where performers wowed the audience with their perfect moves and motion.
Odysseo wrapped up with a lake on the stage. I was astonished when I saw water on the stage, I thought, “Where did that come from?!” The lake consisted of 40,000 gallons of water. The water in which the horses and artists frolic is recycled water.
