Recycled Materials Meet Fashion

Every year I make it a tradition to attend one of the most popular events at Festival of the Arts – Pageant of the Masters,  The Festival Runway Fashion Show. This innovative event was held on August 13 where artists compete to use reclaimed, reused or recycled materials to create the most inspired couture.  The Festival exhibitors included painters and jewelry makers. There were five categories that were presented to the artists in this “Project Runway” like event. They were “Most Innovative Use of Materials“, “Most Creative Concept“, “Most Glamorous & Elegant ‘Red Carpet’ Worthy Creation“, “Most Exciting Ensemble with Wow Factor”, and the “People’s Choice Award” where festival visitors had the opportunity to cast their votes.

The recycled materials that were used were candy wrappers, cardboard boxes,  black Nespresso spoons, plastic bags, VHS tapes, dry cleaning hangers and more. This year’s event was hosted by Golden Globe nominee Joely Fisher also best known for her role in the 90s TV show Ellen. The three-panel judges consist of ’80s super model and fashion correspondent on Good Morning America, Kim Alexis; Laguna Beach Art Commissioner Suzi Chauvel and Pageant of the Masters Director Diane Challis Davy.
