You have probably wondered where is Apollonia Kotero now, the love interest of Prince in the hit movie “Purple Rain” in 1984. Kotero recorded the song “Sex Shooter” written by Prince. It was a Top 10 hit in US R&B and US Dance Charts in 1984. The former Ms. San Pedro and an LA Rams cheerleader in the early ’80s, Apollonia Kotero also appeared in TV shows such as Knight Rider, Chips, Tales of the Gold Monkey, just to name a few.
I got to meet Apolonia at The Hollywood Show on April 13. She was approachable and very friendly. After thirty years, Kotero still looks slim and gorgeous in her skinny jeans, flat shoes and a casual gray shirt.
See what’s keepin’ her up on her toes.
Popbuff: What keepin’ you busy nowadays?
AK: I mentor talents. I have a production company called Kotero Entertainment. We finance independent movies. I’m also producing a couple of reality shows for artists like Lil Jon and Lil’ Kim. My heart is mentoring young talents. My new group that I’m working with right now is called The Fulcos (thefulcos.com). To me, they are the modern day Partridge Family singers/musicians. They are real musicians from 8 years to 17 years of age.
Popbuff: How do you like being part of The Hollywood Show?
AK: It is fun. This is my second time. I’m doing this one because of the 30th year anniversary of Purple Rain. I’ve got a few of that I’m doing throughout the country. We’re also doing a charity benefit in Minnesota in June as an anniversary show but it’s going to be for the American Heart Association.
Popbuff: What is your memorable moment in Hollywood.
AK: Wow, way too many. Meeting Warhol. Meeting Diana Ross at a night club during a huge awards show. She got up to dance “Sex Shooter” so I sat there and I was just numb.
Popbuff: Do you still keep in touch with Prince?
AK: Yes with everybody
Popbuff: What can you say about his new group, the all female band, 3rdEYEGIRL?
AK: I’m not really familiar but I would have to say they’re pretty damn cool because he selects really great musicians. I caught a tail of one of their shows that they did on TV and they’re great.
Popbuff: Who is your favorite band?
AK: They would have to be The Beatles and David Bowie
Popbuff: You’ve been in the biz for so long, what word of advice can you give those that are just starting their career?
AK: Always take fountain in Hollywood. That was Bette Davis advice.I met her and asked “What advice you have for new actors,” she said “Always take Fountain” and I’ll leave it at that.
Great interview. She’s still beautiful and seems like a cool person.
