Southern Californians are very fortunate to have Urth cafes in their neighborhood. The restaurant not only serves its signature heirloom – organic coffees and fine teas but offers an authentic architecture and charming ambiance whether alfresco or inside. With nine beautiful Southern California branches each location has its own character.
Known for peeling back layers of history to unveil architectural treasures, Urth Caffe has its new flagship location in Old Towne Orange. The two-story Victorian building was built in 1888 and overlooks Orange’s iconic plaza. It is Urth Caffe’s second restoration in the county of Orange. The first was The Cottage in Laguna Beach which was built in 1917.
On January 6, hundreds of spectators, VIPs, friends of the owners Shallom and Jilla Berkman, partners/investors, members of the chamber of commerce and Mayor Mark Murphy and former Mayor Tita Smith were among those who supported Urth Caffe Orange grand opening.
The current mayor remarked, “The hand detail on the bricks, the framework inside ….. my favorite story are these columns ….. for those of you who probably don’t know, these are the original to the building that were found. The capitals on top were replicated from original photos. The passion in my mind that makes downtown Orange one of the great places in America ….. embodies this particular building, this particular business and so it is a privilege. A lot of opportunities for success are based on timing, I think the timing is perfect for this building and for this time and this business.”
During the inauguration, Shallom Berkman thanked his wife and partner Jilla for her vision. “I owe this day so much to my wife and partner Jilla who is the visionary of this. This is a very special community. This is a community we wanted to be part of for a long time. And my wife Jilla has always said, ‘We’re not going to Orange unless we can be in the plaza.’ This is like a miracle to have this blessing and to be a custodian of it.” Shallom also mentioned that earlier in their relationship when they went to Europe, they saw great cafes that have been in operation for 400 years. They became part of the community and so much part of culture and traditions. “We said we need that in America. We need places that are for the community that are built to last….to be part of future traditions.”
After the ribbon cutting, the celebration concluded with a dragon dance to honor the year of the pig and to bring in good luck and prosperity.
