You likely first recognized Billy Zane from one of the most iconic films of all time—Titanic. As Caledon “Cal” Hockley, he delivered a memorable performance as the arrogant and entitled antagonist in the film’s unforgettable love triangle, perfectly capturing the excess and privilege of the early 20th-century elite.
But Zane’s career extends far beyond Titanic. His breakout role came earlier in the Australian thriller Dead Calm, earning him a nomination from the Chicago Film Critics Association for Most Promising Actor. He continued to showcase his range in The Believer, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and even made a memorable cameo as himself in Zoolander.
On stage, Zane brought his charisma to Broadway in Chicago, taking on the role of the slick lawyer Billy Flynn. Television audiences may also remember his recurring role on Charmed, where he played the charming, poetry-loving ex-demon Drake. More recently, he appeared in The Boys, portraying a fictionalized version of himself.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Billy Zane at The Hollywood Show, where he graciously took time to chat despite a long line of fans. Here’s our conversation:
Ruchel: How is it connecting with the fans at The Hollywood Show?
Billy Zane: The best thing about connecting with fans at shows like this, especially The Hollywood Show, is that you’ve got people who really love cinema, and it’s always about fans. I’m always fascinated by their stories and what was happening in their lives when the films they seemingly love really timestamped that experience on them. Be it a proposal, a graduation, the loss of a loved one, or perhaps the film brought comfort. So, it’s always about them and their stories. And what’s so endearing to me is the impact that the film had upon their lives and their stories.
Ruchel: What do you enjoy most about playing the antagonist?
Billy Zane: What I enjoy most about playing characters like Cal is mining understanding—not sympathy, per se, but just understanding. Tracking the journey as to why behavior unfolds in the way it does, and then seeing the change that occurs in them, if there’s time to do so, or the film affords it.
Ruchel: How is it working with James Cameron?
Billy Zane: Working with James was, you know, one of the most consummate pleasures of my career. I found him completely engaging, fun, funny, and collaborative. He was first in the water, last out. Nothing but respect. But he was fun, a great leader, and a great friend.
Meeting Billy Zane at The Hollywood Show was a reminder of why he remains such a memorable presence on screen and off. Beyond the iconic roles and decades of work, Zane came across as thoughtful, gracious, and deeply appreciative of the fans who have supported him throughout his career. Whether reflecting on Titanic, discussing the craft of playing complex characters, or sharing praise for James Cameron, he brought warmth and insight to every answer. For fans, it was a chance to reconnect with a familiar star. For me, it was a pleasure to witness the charm and intelligence that continue to make Billy Zane a lasting Hollywood favorite.
